Staff Profiles - Who are we?

Markus Church - Manager

Markus has always been a passionate fisherman from the time he could hold a rod. If it swam he would try to catch it. Having travelled and lived overseas extensively for 9 years, Markus was lucky enough to fish in all manner of exotic destinations, so has a vast experience of many different techniques and types of fishing, from fly to more traditional saltwater techniques. A lot of which, he has found, can be applied back here to our own NZ conditions. Having worked in the fishing retail industry for many years, he has a wealth of knowledge of equipment, techniques, tips and tricks!  If he’s not in the shop, you can almost guarantee he’s either on a river or out in the boat somewhere making the most of what this amazing country has to offer!

Kelvin heads up our Saltwater fishing department and has been a passionate small boat fisherman for many years now. Originally from Hong Kong, Kelvin likes to keep up to date with all the latest fishing techniques and equipment from around the world. He has a passion for slow pitch jigging and micro jigging out of his Stabicraft 425 and shore based squid fishing whenever he can get out (as well as any other fishing he can get to!!). Along with his fishing knowledge, he can also share with you all his culinary skills, on how to prepare and cook your catch so that it melts in your mouth!!

Peter Scott - Freshwater Specialist

Peter heads up our Freshwater / Flyfishing department and has worked in the fishing retail industry since way back when Tisdalls was located in Queen Street, Auckland (which is a long time ago now!). Not only does he have a vast knowledge of the industry, but he has also represented NZ for over 10 years with the NZ Silver Flies Flyfishing team (as well as previously being the NZ Champion). So what he doesn’t know about freshwater fishing, possibly isn’t worth knowing! Pete also runs all our casting lessons and even does a bit of guiding to some of his ‘secret spots’! He also lives on the doorstep of the Manukau harbour, so whenever he can, he’s out there hitting the salt too! Like the rest of us, if Pete’s not in-store, he’s out on the water somewhere. Either fishing himself, giving lessons, or guiding clients to some of the world’s best fishing!

Ben Starns - Part Time Staff

Ben is a super passionate saltwater fisherman and already has some great catches under his belt. Ben’s background was predominantly saltwater fishing, including jigging, slow pitch jigging, gamefishing, etc, but since working here at Rod and Reel he has also taken to flyfishing like a duck to water. His day trips alone, from Auckland to fish the Taupo fishery are a testament of his dedication! Ben has worked in the fishing retail industry for quite a few years now and has a great knowledge of all the latest techniques, rigs, and gear. If he’s not fishing, you can almost guarantee he’ll be researching the latest techniques from overseas and then planning his next trip to put them in to practice!
